I don't recall ever having as serious a birder in the boat as Hank was, and at 19 with a scraggly beard and a pretty serious looking zoom lens on his camera, I wasn't quite sure what to make of him.
His dedication to avian sightings was top-shelf, dropping his rod regularly to binoc and zoom shoot a wide variety of birds, many of which he had to look up on his handy birder app to properly ID. He checked a number of species off his life list in our three days together, quite a few at the sacrifice of potential trout bites - birds were definitely Hank's focus.
I learned a lot about our local bird life I didn't know before, and Hank learned how to take a pretty good fish pic along the way.
